Cincinnati 1972 Filmed in front of stage.. by Via Lilla

That is really great footage to see, I can "hear it"in my head as I watch it. I tried to sync music up to it also but the bits were just too short to enjoy. that was a very anticipated show for me, a 16 year old in 1972. I had to run away from home for the weekend as I got myself in trouble with my parents a few days before and they told me "no concerts!" I'd seen Tull the year before but I only had Stand Up and Aqualung (for a week before the concert, and I hadn't given it the obligatory 10 listens! Hahahah) and was not ready for what blew me away......So by the time the Thick as a Brick show came to to town I had everything put out by the band and I was ready! I knew every song. So nothing was going to stop me hahahah!! Ian was such a wildman back then. At one point when A New Day Yesterday kicked in, Ian, holding the mic stand, threw himself backwards onto the stage and all you could see was his legs in the air kicking around like he was peddling a bicycle, then he of course jumped back up and sang and played like nothing. A whirling dervish. Just an unbelievable performance. The combination of the music and the crazy physical madness of Ian was stunning. I was changed......again. ;-) after this show, every year, Ian started taming his moves (yes even the Passion play was a bit more tame physically) and by 75 he had reduced a lot of the crazy seeming moves to much stricter "routines" that became more like rehearsed dance moves. They didn't look as spontaneous any more AND as good as they were, in my mind, Tull was a mere "shell" of themselves by 76, hahahaha they really had become a bit of a corporate machine by 78/79. Nowadays, with the perspective of 2014? That thought was crazy.....I'd take a ride in that time machine to see "corporate Tull"any old time. I was smiling inside when I "turned myself in" to my parents the next day. A couple of weeks restriction was my penalty. I had been working on learning some songs on my sisters guitar up until that point but after that show I said to myself I want to play the flute like THAT, so it was summer I couldn't go anywhere or see any friends so I asked my mom to take me to the music store and help me rent a flute (I was 16) and needed an adult to sign. So I sat home and learned the first lines of Bouree for my restriction! I was happy and it led to another great obsession. Darin PS. That green hounds tooth suit Martin wore on this tour represented his guitar sound to me. That green electric buzz!

"By 1976 Tull were a mere shell"! Yes that does sound pretty strange to say but I know what you mean. Ian's stage persona from 68-72 got progressively crazier. By 1972 he was just let loose! I have seen nothing else like it. No wonder all you that saw THAT live were impacted so.. I wonder if he then purposely tried to separate himself from the "crazed madman flautist" association. I tend to think Tull were just getting so tight by performing all that material that everything naturally became more controlled.. and sharpend. Even the jams tightened up over the years from loose improv to to note for note precision.

I think you hit the nail on the head Erin. They needed for it all to be predicable to a point, so they could guarentee a consistently good show and not fail one night because last night was so good. I still think the solos were improvised each night but Ian's stage act tightened up considerably. Three of my super 8 films contain the same part of TAAB from 72, 73 and 75 and you can very clearly see the same move change from a loose and spontaneous one to a very controlled one. And the 73 version actually looks like he could hurt himself doing this. So I could understand another reason for calming down a bit. I'll post the vids and the times a bit later. Darin

I tend to think that change occurred around the period between Warchild and Minstrel, more probably as a result meeting Shona, settling down and moving into married life. It probably became less about making music with your mates and realising that this was going to be the income generator for the family, so better focus on it in an independent and business like way.
Maybe "Too old to rock and roll" was more prophetic than imagined. Could it be more about signalling the end to the single life and your independence rather than being at an end as a 'rocker' [as per the storyboard] or a madcap musician? It was just shortly afterwards that there was a major shift in style with the more folkier SftW and HH sets; where the shows were more slick, professional and, some might say, sedate stage presence particularly when compared with the Ian of old.

Darin Here are the snippets that portray the moves I was referring to. First being 72 then 73 and 75. Its pretty clear that in the 75 show he had his feet pretty firmly planted as the earliest looks as if he is moving a little like Ray Bolger (scarcrow in the Wizard of Oz) and is always almost in a fall. lol. Geeky you say? You bet. Darin Cody

Milwaukee 1975 8mm Stills, from my private collection. And I see you have footage of Jeffery juggling the "zebra shit". This is epic! My friend Chris Crump worked with Tull in 73 and taught Jeffery how to juggle. The Zebra was brought out for "Bungle" I believe?

Not exactly 8mm film, these are from a 1/2'' video tape taken at the Fillmore East December 1969.

Awesome!
It might not be the best topic for this but many years ago I saw a very short clip of the Hyde Park concert from 68 and a few still images. I never found that again. Do any of you guys have that?

Do any of you guys have that? This one? From my understanding is that this was just newsreel footage, they just shot a few brief thing to broadcast or something, i don't think they filmed a full song..

Wow! Thanks a lot! Yes, that was the case as I recall. I saw it in a website I never found again and it sounded like a quick thing for some TV show or whatever. There were also some other pictures, but I'm very happy to see this one again!
