When I was in college, I took commercial design. We were encouraged to experiment with various new (at that time) mediums like colored dyes, Design markers, etc. I usually worked a musician into my assignments, the majority being Ian Anderson! LOL!! Here's a few from the year one... (circa 1978-79)

I'll bore you with one more. This was a print done from a slab of wood covered with linoleum. We had to cut away the linoleum, ink up the plate, and make impressions using a press. The instructor thought the design was "boring". LOL!!

In my high school years I was lucky enough to come across this great gruff older woman master Printmaker and she offered (even though it was outside the curriculum ) to teach etching to anyone that cared to learn, she had a huge press in the classroom and had made arrangements with the science dept to do the acid baths. She was a great artist and taught me a lot of stuff I normally wouldn't have gotten till college. The kind of teacher that would feed you stuff if you displayed the hunger to learn it. I loved woodcuts and linoleum block too. Beautiful work Mike. Darin

MIke, they are fantastic pieces. As Darin says, it's your tutor who was boring, they are outstanding pieces.
If you have more I'm sure everyone would enjoy seeing them
I had great art tutor at school, but sadly the school didn't promote the arts as much as it should have done. IN my year were several great artists, but from what I understand none went into the business and even fewer produce 'amateur' work now.

OMG..... Your drawings/paintings are just exquisite and I am blown away from these drawings of Ian. You have such a talent, please post whatever you have stashed away in your vault. Just know that you put a big smile on my face from seeing all of these.

Thanks again, everyone for the nice words. I really appreciate it. Darin suggested I post the Aqualung mural I painted on my bedroom wall in the late 70's. Sorry if people have seen this before, as I've posted it on several different boards. Here's the backstory: My folks always allowed me to indulge my interests, as long as they were above board. When I told them I wanted to paint the Aqualung cover on my bedroom wall they were all for it. I'd been a longtime Burt Silverman fan, and this was his masterpiece as far as I was concerned back then. I painted it, then photographed myself with it for a photo class in college circa 78/79. Years later I always lamented that I never took any color photos of it. All I had was my black and white self portrait. My mother passed away in 2012. As we were going through her things, we found bags and bags of photographs. She took a ton of photos of several events in her life. It fell to me to sort through all of them to jettison the ones no one would want, and to sort the rest between me and my two brothers. On the bottom of the last bag were these *color* photos of Aqualung!! I never knew she took these. All I can assume is when she and dad moved out of that house in 1990 she photographed it before my dad had to paint over it.

Mike: (May I call you Mike?)
The drawing that you did of Aqualung in black and white took my breath away and then seeing below that, the colored version....I am in awe with your talent. Please don't hold anything back that you have done over your lifetime of Ian and/or Ian and Tull together that you feel like sharing. I speak for myself, as well as many others on this board... we welcome whatever drawings you share. What a nice thing your mother did taking photographs of your drawings of Aqualung before your dad painted over them. What a nice keepsake..
Thank you kind Sir for such a treat.
Regards,
Silken...

Silken, thanks very much. I don't have much more to share but have been itching to do a painting of Ian since I haven't painted him for thirty years. I appreciate the kind things you said.

Okay, two more. First, a t shirt design I did when I was 18. Good memories of seeing the classic line up, buying my first new Tull record, Heavy Horses, and trying to celebrate all things Tull in art. The second one is near and dear to my heart. I have been painting since I was ten years old. Usually I start a painting by drawing it all out on the canvas first. This painting of Ian was the first time I ever dove right into a blank canvas with the paint, no prep work. Several years ago, I had a website for my work. A client asked to buy this painting, but I convinced him to let me paint him a duplicate, which he did. I do have a blog with more of my more recent works, although it hasn't been updated in a while: peelthepaint-mike.blogspot.com/Thanks again!

Mike (you never did say if I could call you Mike or not, so I will take it upon myself to use my own judgment....Mike it is)
I am literally just so blown away by your drawings. Talent like yours just doesn't come my way very often. I know you do this out of love for Ian and Tull, but you are way to talented to not get something other than gratis for the fruits of your labor. You should really look into doing this for a living. You know the old saying....find something you really enjoy doing and you will never work a day in your life.
You draw whatever strikes your fancy of Ian, young or old. As Charlie said...INSERT 100 MORE ADJECTIVES HERE....I definitely will visit your blog.
I hope you don't mind but I love your work so much that I have saved some of your pieces to my documents or Facebook so that I can have it on my phone.
Warm Regards,
Silken...

Soo much talent in this group! And this was what I was referring to earlier. This has been seen to death but since I ran across my old plate here is the succession the concept pencil drawing then transferring it to a waxed zinc plate and too many processes to bore you with, ink the plate and press onto a wet sheet of paper. viola. and as planned very carefully 41 years before, it has wound up as the cover on a high end periodical, where it belongs! Thank you Mike. This drawing of Ian holding the flute with his hair flowing is just fantastic. I'm glad you have made money off of your drawings, you definitely have the talent and you should be rewarded. Thank you for sharing all you have and I appreciate you allowing me to save these drawings to my documents so I can put them on my phone. I am still in awe looking at them.

Okay this it for my art, had to dig deep for the 1st pencil drawing done in 1972 at 16. The last one I did to hand off to the subject himself and it worked! David this 2nd one is what I was referring to. That one was done in 1975. I think its time for a better one. Darin

Darin, way cool, my friend!!
I am finishing up a portrait, then have to finish a landscape, then want to try to paint Ian again. I want to use a classic shot from pre-1977.
Have you done any art of him lately? I'd love to see it if you have....

This painted by Sue Martin.. a close family friend.
Not sure off hand when it was done but I know it's been around since at least the late 70's.
