Hello all!
I have recently discovered this song from Tallis (after reading about them in various places) and I'm quite impressed. It's interesting to note that the former members of Tull followed a similar electronic sound in the early 80s, and provides a glimpse into what Tull might've sounded like had the band stayed together. Aside from the vocals, I also think it's a pretty fine piece of music. What's the story on Tallis? Why wasn't this ever released?

Ian, from what I've read in interviews with Palmer and Evens, Tallis consisted of 3 keyboard players themselves and another , can't remember his name but I believe he was a college educator that had limited time. Palmer was very interested in synths and duplicating orchestral instrument sounds and from what I'd gathered all round, was that Evens, towards the end of Tull proper, was mainly interested in classical forms and constantly practiced his Mozart and Bach. Which was something I think was not what Ian was hoping for or a direction he wanted to go. I think they arranged one public performance and after that the third keyboard player fell out and it may have been Chrysalis that had been interested at the beginning but pulled out, and they could not find a recording deal. Then interest fell apart. I don't recall Barrie commenting on Tallis. All this is from my vague memory so some details may be in error but I think I found most of it in AND tapes #1. Interesting stuff and sounds Soooo 80's I'm not sure who the vocals are....Palmer maybe? Darin

Ian, Darin's right, the excellent AND Tapes Vol 1 covers the Tallis tale in an interview with David Palmer on page 272. The interview was taken from AND #46 [October 1994] David describes the band as being himself, John Evans, Bill Worrall, David Bristow [who also played on David's Orchestral Pink Floyd album], another keyboard player and a drummer.
Well worth reading Dave and Martin's interview with DP if you can, it gives a great insight not only into DP's musical life but also into the way Ian works.

My dad (also a massive Tull fan) had a subscription to Dave Rees' great AND mag and gave me every copy of it a few years ago. I poured over them for weeks, but it's been quite awhile since I've read them. Perhaps that's where I read about Tallis in the first place? I will have to dig them out again, because I might just have the issue in question, thanks!

This song is amazing and it has a strong Tull feeling about it. Something that was missed at some degree in later Tull records.
