Almost every album has eventually thrown up its out-takes, particularly noticeable from the current crop of reissues such as APP and Warchild, even Aqualung has alternate versions included, but TaaB gets presented as a 'one take' album. Personally, I can't see it since Ian appears to me to refine his work bit by bit over the recording process. So, where are the out-takes, the alternates, the throw away ideas if there are any. Are they already out there? I've always thought that Life's a Long Song and the EP pieces that accompanied it may have been destined for a bigger piece, the long song that was about life. Any views? or do you think the published version of TaaB as we all know and love it really was all that was recorded back in those sessions?

They said that when recording TAAB that they just kept adding stuff as they went so I imagine that is all there is. But if there are any outtakes there isn't enough consecutive pieces for anything significant enough for a release.

The only outtake I'm aware of is an alternate second side. Ian spoke of recording the second side initially, only to find that the entire thing gradually became more and more out of tune, so they had to rerecord the entire thing. Ian thought that the original performance was better!

There is a raw mix of the entire TAAB album performed nearly all LIVE without the flute or guitar overdubs which Steven Wilson sent to Ian. It demonstrated to Ian's suprise, just how much of the album was recorded live. SW wanted this included with the 40th anniversary package but Ian declined the idea. That would have been an interesting bonus track.

Ian thought that the original performance was better! Yes. But knowing Ian he probably just re recorded it with the same tape...
