The Orchestral stuff is F**king fantastic! So many high points in the package. One is Tomorrow Was Today which I have always enjoyed as a live track on boots and a very electric riff heavy song. I was imagining all the rococo that would be added in the studio in 74 that would water down the song. BUT ITS GREAT! It's really the highlight for me among the extra tracks.
The Orchestral stuff is gorgeous and very unexpected, so dynamic. You can hear little bits of theme creep through the background once in a while it spins along. More on all this later as Ive only had one complete run through. I have hit the 2nd cd 2 or 3 times though. The 5.1... I need to listen to again and again. First run through I was playing with settings and it seemed, as has been true in the past, acoustic tracks, less sonically dense, seem to separate the best. I think that may be one of the reasons that SW quit doing ELP releases, just a wall of sound. So Ladies and Skating Away really come off great and sound brand new. That said Two Fingers was a killer track, so much more dynamic. It may have been my imagination and my ears had finally tuned in along with my system but it just seemed to keep nudging up a notch with every section. It was really great to hear this with new ears, a great beautiful package. Im still reading the tiny little words lol. The section with Kathrine (?) and Bridget Proctor was a good read. Pretty funny. As Kathrine was being introduced to the band and not knowing who Ian was……..hehehe. The band was staying in the Beverly Wishire Hotel!!! pricey digs when just the year before they were in the International Hotel by LAX (not an elegant spot) I guess they were riding pretty high at that point in their career "Tull on top" was so true. I remember going to pick this album up the day it was released putting it on and being so excited (and relieved) to find a track like Back Door Angels that saved me from the distress of listening to BitJ on the radio previous to release. To have gone from the complex odd time signatures and weird drama in APP, that I was in love with, to then come down to a poppy ditty was so off the rails that I thought they were on. After a few listens though (and again) seeing the Tull Circus that this tour was, I was absolutely sold on this record. In the whole cannon of Tull releases its not my favorite but it brings back some great memories of Tull at that time. Gotta go listen again.
Ill be back with more, plus an attempt at boiling the Tull Convention down to a few paragraphs (Its impossible) Im finally come down, it was so much to take in, meeting so many live people that you already know through the chat sites and Facebook. Catching up with some old pals was very nice and positive. Having one of my first online Tull friends, Don Bauer and his girl Anita were so great to see and they were the happiest couple always, but Ill get into the individuals later. To say it was dizzying is a vast understatement, so many great folks and we all had one thing in common. We were all Tull fans. WHAT A TRIP THAT WAS.
The Jethro Tull Group itself got some very very lovely compliments from a lot of people. THAT was really gratifying. (We are very well liked in Norway!! Thanks Knut if your out there)
Anyway till later
