Hi everyone.
Disclaimer: My head's still reeling from the show, so this review is not well thought out at ALL.
Okay, so, I've heard some boots from this tour and I was admittedly not looking forward to it. I (like many) felt that Ian's voice was a little weak and the current band couldn't cut it with the older guys. Because of this, I kept my expectations low and attainable.
Boy, was I wrong. I happy to report that not only am I glad that I went, it was an incredible show full of energy that I didn't know IA was capable of delivering live anymore. The show was dynamic, loud, exciting, and the performances were alive and brimming with passion.
Highlights for me were the first set. The Homo Erraticus lite set jumped off the stage with a certain immediacy and power that the disc lacks. All of the tracks worked, even "The Browning of the Green" (not a favorite of mine), as the band brought such passion and conviction to them that made me realize that this is a ROCK record. Perhaps not progressive rock, but this songs do contain a certain energy that previous IA solo material did not and this band nails it. It was so great that I was actually disappointed when "Bouree" started (yes you read that correctly!).
However, the "Bouree" that was delivered was, once again, a new arrangement which meant for some fun surprises. The real highlight for me, though, was a near complete performance of Thick as a Brick side 1. The band, once again, played it with such power and passion that I was so caught up in it that I was actually emotionally moved by the piece. Perhaps its the nostalgia value, but the TAAB section was simply amazing; I can count on one hand the amount of near-religious experiences I've had (all of them musical). This was one of them. I can't rave about this enough! Speechless.
Second set was somewhat disappointing after the near flawless and inspired first set. I have to admit that the weakened vocals on the classic Tull set diminished the performance for me (which was otherwise strong). "Songs from the Wood" was particularly a problem; maybe it's the mix but the vocal harmonies just didn't work for me in this track. Even the "Critique Oblique" section left much to be desired - I personally think that Ryan O'Donnell should pick up the vocals more often as the performance, as a whole, was best when Ryan was singing and Ian was playing flute, I hate to say.
The evening picked up again, oddly enough, with "Farm on the Freeway", which was a surprisingly inspired performance with some great guitar work from Florian (I'm a Martin-ite, but I give credit where it's due!). The predictable "Aqualung" / "Locobreath" ending was also great. I have to confess to a general burn-out on all things Aqualung, but I enjoyed these two tracks (and their improvised solos) a lot more than I had anticipated. Plus, it's hard to not feel moved by 1369 pairs of feet (the show was sold out) stamping in unison to that classic bass line.
Overall, great show. I'd strongly advise you to go check this out, as the goods far outweigh the bads! The amazing first half makes up for the less than stellar second half (though I'm guessing most will disagree with me on this point!) and I'm sure even the most cynical of Tull fans will find something enjoyable here.

Hi Ian
Good to hear you really enjoyed the show, an honest review from someone whose opinion is valued makes me look forward to seeing the gig in a couple of weeks.
My only criticism of the set list is a wish to see some old tracks dropped, including the standard bouree, aqualung and loco for the simple reason it would be good to hear something new, plus drop SftW due to vocal restrictions.
Was WYTHTHM on the list and did Dave G add vocals as heard on some YouTube clips?
Hope you managed to place your spare ticket.

Yes, Dave added some extra vocals to "With you there to Help Me"

Thats a great write up Ian, thanks for posting it. I cannot help but agree in a foreshadowed way. I myself would rather see material performed that was written and recorded recently as it would not reveal the weakness in IA's voice, plus I want to see things I haven't seen 40 times. It's a shame that HE was what was cut as opposed to SFTW which I grimaced at during the 2011 (last) Tull show I saw. He could play any number of things that would have reflected "best" Tull. I've always been a fan of B sides anyway, "Best of Tull" doesn't have to reflect the set on one of the many "Best of Tull" releases out there. That said, I am so looking forward to November 8th.

TT, Those were great best of albums (No Critique Oblique though, edit 8 and 9 were well worn out by the time the album was released) for the time….dont tell be you couldn't assemble a "Best of" set list from after this era…..I know you can. How about we try?
Anyone want to put together their "B side" best of set list that would make sense for todays IA Band?
Im going to think on it tonight.

(of course I go anyway) but it would be very refreshing. 1. Quizz Kid 2. Mother Goose 3. Reasons for Waiting 4. TAAB, "Do you believe in the Day" 5. Clasp 6. The Chequered Flag 7. Fires at Midnight/Weathercock 8. Fallen on Hard Times 9. Dun Ringell 10. Warm Sporran 11. The Waking Edge 12. Fly by Night 13. Critique Oblique/ Magus Perde 14. Farm on the Freeway 15. A Gift of Roses 16. Bouree 17. Aqualung 18. Living in the Past (early 90s version) That was in a rush but still tried to fit some things in there that need to be. (yes, I've heard a million times but…..they couldn't get away without a nod to a couple regulars) Darin Your turn

(yes, I've heard a million times but…..they couldn't get away without a nod to a couple regulars) Darin Lost my original post - crap! I'm taking too long now...curses! -I was thinking along the lines of The Best of Ian Anderson - I would like to see Secret Language performed in its entirety with a best of from the rest of the solo material. Your list looks good from here, I'd agree for the most part. I'd drop these for my own selfish reasons. Bouree Aqualung Living in the Past (early 90s version) These would be a cool best of with videos. Moths The Whistler Heavy Horses Dun Ringill Lap of Luxury Steel Monkey Jump Start Said She Was A Dancer Ramble on... The Secret Language Of Birds is perfect. Martin Barre on Boris Dancing & The Water Carrier. Adding Andrew Giddings and Gerry Conway to the album makes it sound more like The Secret Lineup Of Tull to my ears. On DOT COM El Nino is great. When I saw Tull live I was disappointed it was not performed. I wish for this concert. El Nino A Gift Of Roses The Dog-Ear Years Beside Myself At Last Forever Stuck In The August Rain This Free Will Strange Avenues Ears Of Tin Rock Island Part Of The Machine The Waking Edge Heat Saboteur Overhang The Clasp Flying Colours Cup Of Wonder And Further On Encore: Baker Street Muse ...and yes I miss Martin Barre in the Tull lineup

I'd like to see this band attempt a bigger chunk of APP. I once heard a boot of Tull doing a 10 minute excerpt from roughly the Icy Wastes section, through Critique Oblique and bits of side 2 (if memory serves). Might be cool (with Ryan singing).

Music cool, not crazy about the lyrics or the delivery of the lyrics. First Tull tune that I really complained about.

I found it so quirky and out of character I really liked it. I suppose it's because I am a big fan of TOTRNR [maybe the only one], and I thought this worked perfectly for the Ray Lomas persona and how out of place the song and he was.
I have always wanted to know the order of play for TOTRNR and the 'extra' tracks. Sad git that I am.

For Michael Collins Jeffrey and Me has become a big family hit here with the great 5.1.

Could've been "Out of Egypt" 74 in Australia or Japan, I don't remember which but that opened with that chunk of APP and it was good. Darin

I'm with Erin, the title track is my least favorite. It always sounded out of place in context.

I can go with that for TOTRNR [the track] probably the most monotonous on the album
