While luxuriating in the new remixes, I was thinking, while listening to the chateau and the APP CDs this morning, about Ian's prowess as a songwriter/musician. His ability to refashion the chateau tapes into APP in a relatively short space of time, whilst touring and producing a show that I remember as spectacular and an album that has stuck with me for 40 odd years. Despite his recent pronouncements that it was pretty much all him, the current mix of chateau proves how strong the band were back then (well it does to my ears anyway) but the effort to put the new spin on the chateau work back then in 1972/73 must have fallen on Ian in the main.
It made me wonder, if Ian hadn't gone down the route of being the main man in a rock band with such big ideas, would he have cut it to the same degree of longevity as a solo singer songwriter in the vein of a Cat Stevens or James Taylor; playing his beautifully crafted acoustic numbers like 'Wondering Aloud/Again' or 'Just trying to be' etc?
