From Steve Jeal at the Southampton Guildhall tonight. "Totally rocking the Guildhall" Copyright Steve Jeal Nice to see them using the full width projection, I hope they don't switch back to the 'portrait' look they had on TaaB2 it looked a little lost at some venues.

Setlist Spoiler, the setlist is further down so look away if you don't want to know. Slideshow of pictures here I arrived at the Venue approx 45minutes prior to the doors opening and was just about the first person there so had time for a couple of extra shots hence the truck and tour bus while waiting I decided to get a cup of tea from the cafe in the Guildhall square for which I was charged £2 and it wasn't even a decent cuppa but while in the cafe in walked Emanuael the stage sound tech so had a brief chat with him before going back across the square to the venue where I bumped into Tom the merch man and I noticed someone furtivily standing by the front of the venue, it was Florian Ophale who was having a smoke and who I thought was making a phone call but as it turns out was practicing his lines, grabbed my first official selfie with him before sitting down to drink the aforementioned 'Tea' a chap walked past me away from the venue and I recognised it was Drummer Scott Hammond so after finishing the tea I waited for a while until he returned and grabbed my second selfie with him. Now the time was getting on and as the clock bells chimed out it was 7pm and time for doors, had a bit of a chuckle with Mikey the front of house tech when he realised the two tull baseball caps next to each other on the merch stall looked like a large 'Tull' bra before moving into the arena where he showed me over the sound console, using the samsung camera app to try and get a couple of pictures of it I realised the camera app was a pile of poo and if I couldn't get that in focus I had no hope of getting any decent shots of Ian and the band so decided to use the 'Google Camera app which proved easier and more reliable to use. Having a front row seat at the end of an aisle I was in a good position to get some shots but as I had no photo pass this time had to be a bit sneaky and I thought I would try a few 'test shots' firstly I blinded the lady next to me as I have a 6" screen and was at 3/4 brightness I had to think again as I would have stood out like a lighthouse when the lights went down so turned the screen to minimum brightness and with the cover half closed I was set, before the show we are treated to a range of video songs on the big projection from the likes of Seth lakeman, Anna pheobe and fairport convention. 7.30pm Show started promptly with a spoken narration Video presentation of the band members looking after a supposedly poorly Ian in bed in Switzerland and Ryan came on with a mop cleaning the stage, then the music started first half was HE in full and it was superb all the tracks played very loud and as I have been listening to the album for a while the show had my foot going from the very start, every song faithfully recreated from the album with some nice video images on the full width backdrop. Ian never used his little guitar once during the first half. The quality of the sound was ok but loud and rocking so if you prefer the quieter acoustic stuff you may not like this. The only thing I found was the levels of Ians and Ryans vocals were different with Ian having more volume but both suffered from too much high end from where I was sitting. But Homo Erraticus live was really enjoyable and the songs flowed nicely along without any pausing inbetween, The first hour shot by and all to soon the last notes of Cold dead reckoning faded away and we prepared for the second half. 8.55ish Second half Started First song LITP, Sounded great which got the second half off with a flyer sounded a bit more beefy then I have heard before with some good guitar and bass work. Bouree, The usual Bouree although might have been me, but it seemed shorter then usual. Sweet Dream, Totally rocked, the floor was vibrating and seemed to have a rearranged intro. Teacher, It was great to hear this apparently Ryan was asked what 'Tull' tune he would like them to play and he said Teacher. Sounded really good and more up to date played live and again the place rocked. With you there to help me, This tune I like and it was ok but sound was a bit muddy in places. Critique Oblique - Passion play, first time I have heard any APP live and it was great to hear for about 5 mins or so. TOTRnR, The one we all know no suprises here. Songs from the wood, Last time I heard this live it was not too good but tonight was great with Ryan, David and John all doing the harmonies and Ryan popping out from behind the drums with a pair of cymbals to the right of the stage Farm on the freeway, OK I like the Song and have heard this a few times and tonight it was ok. I have heard it played better although it was quieter last time and more melodic (maybe because it had Martin playing it) No disrespect to Florian but you do notice on this track. My God, Interesting addition to the intro by John on the keyboards, we all know this one and it was played with passion tonight Aqualung, again the standard end of show song belted out tonight. Pause for band intro on the video screen with the band returning to the stage one by one before leaving again before encore Locomotive breath (encore) Really rocking end to a great show, the floor was thumping and no balloons. 10.15 Show endOverall this was one of the most enjoyable Tull/IA shows I have ever been to (and the loudest even though I only have one working ear) and I have been to a few over the last 30 years, Ian seemed quite relaxed and full of energy and on the whole his vocals mixed well with the extra Ryan vocals and considering this is only the second show of the tour the band were really tight and you got the feel that they were a band and not Ian with a couple of chaps backing him that I feel we have had in recent times, only thing was the high end on the vocals which made them distort in places (both Ryan's and Ian's) Advocates of Ians and Tull acoustic stuff I don't think will like it. Fantastic and the video projections were great and related to the songs (some using the original music videos) the introduction videos for the two halves were well thought out and hats off to James for putting it all together.

A good account Steve, nice shots too. Sounds like you didn't have a half bad time. Thanks very much for the fine report. Darin

Steve
Thanks for the great review, the news of a bit of APP has whetted my appetite for the 25th April gig alone. I hope you didn't mind me adding a couple of your stage snaps here, I opted not to post your personal ones unless you had OK'd them in advance and I wasn't going to bother you with that request halfway through a gig.
A quick couple of questions;
I'd be interested to know if you noticed any new artwork in the vein of the LP cover during TOTRNR?
and
Did Ian introduce Critique Oblique with any tales of AAP?
Off to go through your slideshow now accompanied by a coffee and a mid-morning digestive!
